REQUIRED LISTENING -- Dylan

So I was chatting with our good pal Lordy (of 704 infamy) the other day while playing chess in the park (the guy is so hung over at 11am, he falls prey to the Steinitz Defense every time), and as he's known to do, he starts blathering on and on about his hero, the one and only Robert Zimmermann.  The guy can go on and on forever on this topic; its the only thing he talks about more than he talks about these guys. Be warned.  Anyway, so he's vomiting Dylan minutiae all over me, and I made the idiotic mistake of asking him how he would rate the man's discography.  I've never seen him more engaged and at peace,  scribbling out the answer to my inquiry on a Wienerschnitzel napkin.

Personally, I don't consider myself anything more than a casual admirer. I'm actually more fascinated by the man than his music.  That being said, even I, Haterus Xavier IV, cannot deny his importance in history's musical Canon.  I thought it a waste not to pass along this wealth of musical knowledge to you.  If you are a newcomer to Mr. Dylan and you don't know where to start your listening, please look no further.  If you're a die hard fan, please use the list below (ordered by importance from least to most) to gauge your affinity for the man and his work.  If you disagree with what you see, please go here and send hate mail, or you can use the comment section.  I hope you find this as helpful as I do, pallys.

I have excluded the album titled "Dylan" because I've never heard it (out of print) and it's generally accepted to be non-canonical because it was put out by Columbia out of spite, without Bob's permission, after he ditched them to make an album with Geffen. It's apparently just a bunch of Self Portrait outtakes, and Self Portrait itself was an intentionally awful fuck you aimed at his fans. So it's probably pretty bad. Who knows.
